Argumentative essay
An essay that discusses an issue by giving BOTH sides of the argument while proving the author’s claim is correct. Issue A topic/question that is debatable and is NOT a simple “yes” or “no” answer. It must be fact based. Thesis A statement written as a complete sentence that includes your claim and supporting reasons. Claim/Argument A specific statement that can be argued and proved with evidence. This is what the author is proving in the essay. Counterclaim/Counterargument A statement supporting the other side of the issue that recognizes WHY someone might argue the other side of the issue. Rebuttal Reasons why the counterclaim is wrong. Rebuttal MUST specifically address the counterclaim to be effective. Introduction The first paragraph of your essay; it includes a hook, topic summary, and thesis statement. Body paragraph The middle paragraphs of your essay that explain your reasons, contain supporting details, and include both the counterclaim and rebuttal. Conclusion The final paragraph of the essay that restates your thesis and summarizes your arguments from the essay.
