Cooper Middle School: The Hidden gem of cobb county
Good evening!
This week we are remediating and reviewing for the upcoming MiniTouchstone 1.1 on Friday 8/23/19. Students will complete a variety of review activities including homework focused on their area of weakness, in class concept review, and targeted leveled practice in composing an analytical constructed response. MiniTouchstone 1.1 Students will take our first MiniTouchstone on Friday 8/23/19. This is a county created cold reading skills assessment that will count as a performance task (test) grade. Homework: Assignments Due Thursday 8/22/19 this week
Students will have an opportunity to revise and resubmit constructed responses that scored a 75 or lower through our concept deployment process. Tuesday’s deployment will focus on the citing text evidence constructed response from 8/9/19 and Wednesday’s deployment will focus on analyzing theme development constructed response from 8/16/19. Students who have already demonstrated mastery of the concept will complete an extension writing assignment on the specified day. Many homerooms also have computers or Ipads available for student use during homeroom. It is the student responsibility to utilize the available technology to complete class assignments or arrange an alternative with the teacher BEFORE the deadline. Waiting until the class period the assignment is due or after the deadline has passed to report access issues will not excuse the assignment from the gradebook. Gradebook Grades are updated several times a week. Please check the gradebook in StudentVue/ParentVue at least once a week to stay up to date on your student’s grade and progress in all classes. Back to School Dance The first dance of the year is this Thursday 8/22/19. Students must pay for the dance in advance and turn in a signed parent permission slip at the time of payment. Volunteer chaperones and donations are still needed for the dance. Respectfully, Jamie Hayes 7th Grade ELA Cooper Middle School

Text Elements PowerPoint Theme PowerPoint Weekly E-mail Good Afternoon, This week we are starting our study of theme and the interactions of text elements in literature. This week’s assessment on Friday will cover both of those concepts. Grade Book I do not currently have access to my gradebook in order to post grades as some of the rosters are still being finalized. Later this week I should have access for posting grades. At that time, I will update the gradebook for all assignments issued so far this year. I anticipate having all grades updated by the end of the day Thursday 8/15/19. Homework Students have assignments in USATestprep over theme and the interactions of text elements. School computer labs open at 8:10 in the morning for students who need to use the school technology to complete assignments. Weekly Assessment This Friday’s assessment will cover theme and the interactions of text elements in a story. Students will read a “cold” text (one they have not previously studied) and answer text based questions applying their skills in these areas to the assessment. Respectfully, Jamie Hayes 7th Grade ELA Cooper Middle School Dear Students,
Welcome to 7th Grade English Language Arts. I am excited for this school year and the opportunity to work with you this year as you continue to learn about ELA. My goal as your teacher this year is to help you become better independent critical thinkers. You may be wondering how critical thinking relates to ELA, but by helping you improve as readers and writers, you will improve as independent critical thinkers—a skill you can use in all aspects of your life now and in the future. I am a Georgia native and have lived in the metro Atlanta area all my life; in fact, all my immediate family still lives in metro Atlanta which cuts down on traveling during the holidays. Even though my permanent home has always been in Georgia, I traveled Europe extensively during and after college including spending 3 months living in the Swiss Alps working at an international Girl Scout center. My husband and I have lived in Cobb County for 6 years and we have a 2 year old son. In 2006, I graduated from the University of Georgia with a dual Bachelor’s in German and Comparative Literature. My next academic endeavor was a Master’s of Art in Children’s Literature at Hollins University which I earned in 2011. I then went on to earn a Master’s of the Art of Teaching from Kennesaw State University in 2012. As a teacher, I am certified to teacher English Language Arts in grades 6-12, Reading in grade 4-8, and Math in grades 4-8. I have been working in the field of education for the last 19 years beginning with a job as an outdoor education leader for Girl Scouts when I was just 16 and including time as a substitute teacher in addition to my time as a certified teacher in the classroom. This is my 8th year as a certified teacher and my 5th year at Cooper Middle School. Before coming to Cooper Middle School, I worked at Ombudsman teaching ELA to middle and high school students. I also worked at Oakwood Digital Academy—an alternate high school focused on drop out prevention—for students who struggle in a regular high school and need an alternative route to graduation. My happiest moments in teaching are when I see my students succeed and achieve promotion to the next grade or graduation. I have worked with many students who have had academic and personal struggles which could have derailed their progress, but with hard work and refocusing these students have succeeded. My expectations for you as my students and for myself as your teacher are very high. I want nothing but your best this year and promise to give you my best. We are all human and may have bad days, but a bad day does not excuse prolonged subpar performance. Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” As seventh graders, you will be pushed to do new things and may mistakes. You will also learn to correct those mistakes so that when you leave, you have grown as students and as individuals. I look forward in working with you this year and cannot wait to see the many ideas and talents that you bring to the classroom. E-mail is the best way to contact me. My address is [email protected].
