We will have a quiz on the application of these words on Friday. Remember that these are key testing words that students see on a regular basis in all of their core classes in addition to the time we are spending reviewing them in Language Arts.
12powerfulwords.pptx Dear Students,
Welcome to 7th Grade English Language Arts. I am excited for this school year and the opportunity to work with you this year as you continue to learn about ELA. My goal as your teacher this year is to help you become better independent critical thinkers. You may be wondering how critical thinking relates to ELA, but by helping you improve as readers and writers, you will improve as independent critical thinkers—a skill you can use in all aspects of your life now and in the future. I am a Georgia native and have lived in the metro Atlanta area all my life; in fact, all my immediate family still lives in metro Atlanta which cuts down on traveling during the holidays. Even though my permanent home has always been in Georgia, I traveled Europe extensively during and after college including spending 3 months living in the Swiss Alps working at an international Girl Scout center. My husband and I have been married for four and a half years and we are expecting our first child—a boy—in September. In 2006, I graduated from the University of Georgia with a dual Bachelor’s in German and Comparative Literature. My next academic endeavor was a Master’s of Art in Children’s Literature at Hollins University which I earned in 2011. I then went on to earn a Master’s of the Art of Teaching from Kennesaw State University in 2012. As a teacher, I am certified to teacher English Language Arts in grades 6-12, Reading in grade 4-8, and Math in grades 4-8. While this is my 6th year as a certified teacher, I have been teaching and leading Outdoor Education programs with Girl Scouts since I was 16. With Girl Scouts, I teach canoeing, archery, high ropes (climbing and zipline), outdoor cooking, and a variety of other activities in addition to life guarding at the camp pool. I also worked as a substitute teacher for five years while in pursuing my Master’s degrees—it was my time as a substitute teacher that convinced me to become a full time teacher. Before coming to Cooper Middle School, I worked at Ombudsman teaching ELA to middle and high school students. I also worked at Oakwood Digital Academy—an alternate high school focused on drop out prevention—for students who struggle in a regular high school and need an alternative route to graduation. My happiest moments in teaching are when I see my students succeed and achieve promotion to the next grade or graduation. I have worked with many students who have had academic and personal struggles which could have derailed their progress, but with hard work and refocusing have succeeded. My expectations for you as my students and for myself as your teacher are very high. I want nothing but your best this year and promise to give you my best. We are all human and may have bad days, but a bad day does not excuse prolonged subpar performance. Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” As seventh graders, you will be pushed to do new things and may mistakes. You will also learn to correct those mistakes so that when you leave, you have grown as students and as individuals. I look forward in working with you this year and cannot wait to see the many ideas and talents that you bring to the classroom. Respectfully, Mrs. Hayes Language Arts 7th Grade Read 180 7th Grade |
