Thinking about your independent reading novel answer the following question in a constructed response format. "How does one of the main character's skills or characteristics impact later events in the novel or the plot of the novel?"
Example Response: Harry Potter is the main character in the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling. Harry grew up being bullied by the Dursleys and as a result, he judges people by their actions and not their appearance or possessions. When he first meets Ron in "Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone", he was drawn to Ron and his family because of their genuine openness and acceptance of Harry without expecting anything in return or fawning over his fame. When he learns how poor the family is he "didn't think there was anything wrong with not being able to afford an owl. After all, he'd never had any money in his life until a month ago, and he told Ron so." This is the beginning of a life long friendship with Ron; this friendship along with Harry's close friendships with Hermione, Neville, Luna, and other teens considered awkward or semi-outcasts at Hogwarts and the larger Wizarding community shows how his childhood spent with the Dursleys impacted the way he judges whether or not people are worthy of his friendship and loyalty. His rejection of wealthy or pure blood students as friends (Draco, Pandy, etc.) also supports this character trait.
